In his introduction, Kenneth Cragg of the University of Sussex offers the Western reader valuable insight into the religion and richly poetic literature of the Middle East. He explains further the unlikely growth of mysticism out of the severe and uncompromising theological dogma of medieval orthodox Islam. His selection of prayers and legends are divided into four sections: the first three concern task, search, and goal of the Sufi mystic, and the last examines the significance of the Qur'anic prayer, "Thou Lord of the Worlds."
